What better time of the year to speak about love when it is the beginning of a New Year, and we celebrate love on Valentine’s Day. Love is something that is both precious and is cherished by most of us. Love has many different forms. Love of God, parents, children, grandchildren, family, a spouse, friends, and for many of us our pets.
We tend to use the word love in pretty generic ways and “I Love You” is often said and heard. We also read the words “Lots of Love” on emails, cards, and gifts.
History buffs will be interested to know that the ancient Greeks were quite sophisticated in the way they thought about love. Here are some of the views modernized to today’s standards for us to ponder.
Is about showing loyalty to your friends, caring for them, as well as sharing your emotions with them. So we all should evaluate how many relationships we have that fall into this type of love. It can be with good friends and also with family because siblings feel it, parents feel it, and grandparents feel it.
Playful love is the casual and fun affection between children or casual lovers. We’ve all had a taste of it in the flirting and teasing in the early stages of a relationship. We also experience this when we sit around a bar bantering or gathering and laughing with friends.
Love For Everyone
Another form of love, and perhaps the most radical, is selfless love. This is a love that you extend to all people, whether family members or distant strangers. This type of love was translated into Latin as caritas, which is the origin of the word “charity.”
This type of love is described as a mature, realistic love that is commonly found amongst long-established couples. It is about making compromises to help the relationship work overtime and showing patience and tolerance.
Love Of Yourself
There were two types of self-love. One is unhealthy, where you became self-obsessed and focused on personal fame and fortune. A healthier version of self-love enhances your wider capacity to love. The idea is, if you like yourself and feel secure, you will have plenty of love to give others.
This kind of love represents the idea of sexual passion and desire. It is all about losing control and falling madly in love with a single romantic relationship where we hope to find all the different loves wrapped into a single person or soulmate.
Love is all around us and we need to embrace this emotion and spread the love in our everyday lives. The expression “Love Conquers All” is something we need more of in this volatile world we are living in. We need it for ourselves, our loved ones, and for our country. Let us promote it.
