South Florida Symphony Orchestra Closes Season With Masterworks V: Beethoven, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto Featuring David Shifrin And Mahler

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, presented Mahler’s “Adagietto” from Symphony No. 5, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto featuring David Shifrin, clarinet, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, “Eroica,” as part of its Master-works V series. The concerts took place at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.  “It has been a spectacular season of live, in-person concerts and I’m eternally grateful to be united with our audiences once again,” said Sebrina María Alfonso, music director, South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “The energy shared between us is electrifying!” South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s season finale concert commenced with Mahler’s fourth movement of his Fifth Symphony – a love note to his future wife – and Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, also referred to as Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (with Harp and Piano). Acclaimed soloist, David Shifrin, joined SFSO for this melodious and jazzy two-movement concerto, which was originally commissioned by renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman.  One of only three wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974, Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator. He has appeared with numerous symphonies in the U.S., and internationally with orchestras in many other countries.  SFSO’s magnificent 2021/22 season culminated with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works: his monumental Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major. The “Eroica” Symphony represents a turning point not only in Beethoven’s career — but also in the history of music — setting a new symphonic template for future composers to emulate. This is truly a “Sinfonia Eroica,” or heroic symphony.  Founded in 1997 in Key West by Music Director Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso, the now Wilton Manors-based South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is dedicated to providing enriching cultural music experiences to residents and visitors in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Guided by the belief that music is pivotal to thriving communities, SFSO brings vibrancy and engagement with the arts via innovative programming and transformative educational initiatives.
