The Sports Urban Vehicle (SUV) continues to displace the family sedan as the quintessential car, having risen to astronomical levels of popularity over the span of just 10 years. If you don’t already own one, chances are you’re looking to get one. The choices are numerous and vary in size, performance, and luxury.

The 2023 Mazda CX-90 is the company’s new mid-size crossover SUV. Introduced in February 2023, it is a big step forward for the manufacturer’s Large Product Group. As drivers of CX-90 discover, this new addition to the Mazda is significant in the evolution of environmental and safety performance and the innovations emphasize the greater joy of driving.

The CX-90’s launch enhances Mazda’s SUV lineup, enabling the company to meet customer needs and expectations with three powertrain options: a plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and a 3.3-liter Inline 6 Turbo engine that comes in two variations of differing power.

The standard 3.3 Turbo offers 280 hp with 332 lb-ft of torque, while the high-output 3.3 Turbo offers 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The CX-90’s rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive is designed to respond to changing terrain and deliver power from the various choices of powerplants to the right wheels at the right time.

With Mi-Drive, the driver can switch between four distinct modes designed to optimize power delivery and responsiveness: Normal, Sport, Off-road and available Towing. After you have selected from the power choices, there are five trims to choose from: Touring, Touring Plus, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature.

CX-90 PHEV is equipped with the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, which is an electric motor mated to a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that combined produce 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using the recommended premium fuel. The CX-90 PHEV is designed to operate purely on an electric motor in a variety of driving scenarios. To provide owners with flexibility and peace of mind, Mazda’s 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine has been adapted to work alongside the electric motor and 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery. This is helpful for longer drives or when the driver requires maximum acceleration, such as merging
onto the freeway.

The CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus features the 12.3-inch full center display that includes touchscreen capabilities for only Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This package includes Front Crossing and Turn-Across Traffic Braking and 360° View Monitor with See-Through View.

This is one of the special items offered to the CX-90 that is still a mid-size SUV that seats up to seven passengers across three rows. Maximum cargo capacity is 71.2 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded down.

As with all Mazda vehicles, safety is a priority for the CX-90 for both the driver and all occupants. Standard i-Activsense safety features include Smart City Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. All CX-90 models also include a new rear seat alert feature to help avoid accidentally leaving objects or occupants still in the rear seats when exiting the vehicle.

Starting MSRP for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is $39,595 for the 3.3 Turbo Select to the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus starting at 59,950, not including destination and handling fees.
